This one isn’t billed as a gothic, but historical fiction. The back text makes me think it might be more of an intrigue. However the author, Janet Louise Roberts, had the absolute audacity to choose the pen name Bronte, so here we are. Another first in a series I will probably never logistically be able to finish…

The Englishman, Robert Arundell, is given more description in the text, so I presume he is the one protectively buffeting poor Charity Osborne, who should be blonde, and wearing one of a number of colorful snoods, in fact.
“His smile became him, digging the hard lines of his face and adding warmth to his brown eyes. His complexion was quite tan, probably permanently so from his outdoor years in the army. He wore his black curly hair cropped short. The scar fascinated her; it was stitched red across his right temple.”
The Frenchman, Jacques Beauclerc, is instead described in short bouts.
Hazel eyes.
Stunning puce suit.
Handsome curly hair.

This one ended with a lazy villain reveal and the silliest romantic resolution I have ever read.
“Their lips met a last time, and she felt him tremble. She herself was shaking with the intensity of their love.”
